The immediate metro missed out on the brunt of this latest round of severe weather, but our viewers to the north and west did not fare so well. Although we were spared any tornadic activity, the heavens did open up and give us quite the gullywashers. Check out this

Storms swept across central Minnesota on Wednesday into Thursday morning with lightning, hail and strong winds toppling trees, crushing crops and destroying local landmarks. The National Weather Service received multiple reports Thursday morning of trees down in Barron County, Wisconsin due to strong winds, including the towns of Rice Lake and Cumberland. VIEW PHOTOS

A little luck in Luck, Wis.

Of all of the damage in Luck, Wis., Rachel Erickson may have hit the jackpot in a couple ways. The first is that of the 4 trees down in her yard, 3 of them hit her house but didn't do enough damage that they have to move out. The second is that she's engaged to the owner of the local tree service – the guy everyone wants in their yard right now.

“I was doing dishes right when the first one fell,” Erickson said. “The wind was so noisy and the rain was so noisy, it was just a thump. All we heard was just a thump.”

Across Luck, what you notice is so many of the trees that fell didn't do a lot of other damage. The falling trees scared Doug Pederson's grandsons, but grandpa only lost a couple of sheds.

“We got very lucky as far as that goes,” Pederson said (no pun intended).

The storm rolled through the town of 1,100 around 8 p.m. Wednesday and didn't last long – maybe 30 to 45 minutes. But it was intense, knocking down a lot of power lines and knocking out electricity for most of the day Thursday.

Dorset, Minn. loses 2 restaurants

Dorset, Minn. – the self-proclaimed "restaurant capital of the world" – lost two of its dining spots in the storm. Lightning started a fire early Thursday morning that destroyed the Dorset House restaurant and caused significant damage to Companeros. Both restaurants are in the same building.

Dorset is a town of about two dozen people, three hours northwest of the Twin Cities. The National Weather Service says strong winds blew the roof off another restaurant about an hour away.

Apple crop crushed

The storm also destroyed the apple crop at a farm in central Minnesota. Untiedt's vegetable farm in Waverly, Minn., about 40 miles west of the Twin Cities, lost most of its apples when hail moved across Minnesota on Wednesday.

The apples are now full of holes. The farm just started harvesting last week, ahead of the busy fall tourism season.
