Charges coming for repeat drunk driver in Minneapolis hit-and-run?

Posted: Updated:
MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) -

Charges were expected to be filed Wednesday against a driver who had multiple alcohol-related driving offenses on his record before he was arrested in connection with a hit-and-run crash crash that left a 23-year-old man in critical condition in Minneapolis.

Luis Angel Cruz-Guzman suffered head injuries in the crash that occurred shortly after 2 a.m. on Labor Day in the city's Longfellow neighborhood. He has been hospitalized at the Hennepin County Medical Center ever since. Meanwhile, the man who allegedly put him there has been sitting in jail.

An off-duty Minneapolis police officer witnessed the crash near 27th and East Lake Street, and watched as the driver fled the scene. Five blocks away, that officer caught up with 26-year-old Kaleb Conway, of Shakopee, and arrested him for his role in the hit-and-run. Although police say Conway refused a breath test, he was booked into jail on suspicion of drunken driving -- and it's not his first time.

For a young man, Conway has a long record. In fact, his drinking and driving offenses date back to when he got his license and include charges of underage drinking and open bottle. Toxicology reports are still pending, which is holding up prosecutors. Meanwhile, police are celebrating the arrest as proof that it pays to have off-duty officers approved to conduct extra policing on someone else's tab.
