Only two 90-degree days in Twin Cities in 2014

Posted: Updated:

With plenty of rain and general northwest flow at many levels of the atmosphere, it has been a tough year for the heat to build across the Upper Midwest. Because of that, the metro has seen just two 90-degree days in 2014, with our yearly high at just 92 degrees. This is not an unprecedented event, but it is a little unusual. Since weather records began in 1873, this is just the 9th year where temperatures have failed to get above 90 more than twice. There have been only 3 years that have not had a single solitary 90-degree day, with the most recent occurring in 1993… often called the year without a summer.

Compare this year to the last several years and it looks really cool. Nearly 20 90+ days just last year and more than 30 in 2012.

Looking at just the 90+ days makes it look like an extremely cool summer, but when you factor in 80+ days, this year looks a little warmer…

Granted, not nearly as warm as the past 4 years, but we already have more 80+ days this year than in 2009 and we can get 80s all the way through October. Officially, this summer will go down as extremely normal with the average temperature coming in at just .4 degrees above the 30 year average.
