Actor George Takei talks about his documentary and politics

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX (KSAZ) - Actor and political activist George Takei is premiering his new documentary in Scottsdale.

Takei is best-known for playing Hikaru Sulu on the Star Trek series and films.

He has ties to Arizona including being married to an Arizonan, who was born in the state, and his mother lived in the White Mountains.

"When she passed we scattered her ashes in the Mogollon Rim, she loved the white mountains," said George Takei.

On Monday night, Takei endorsed Fred Duval; he spoke about why politics was important to him.

"Well, when I was 5-years-old I remember that morning when soldiers with bayonets on their rifles came to our home and ordered us out... and we were taken from there first to the horse stables of a racetrack while the camps were being built, this was World War II... we weren't captured by the Japanese, we were imprisoned by our own government" he said.

"We were American citizens; my mother was born in Sacramento, my father was a San Franciscan. I was born in Los Angeles, but we happened to look like the people that bombed Pearl Harbor. We were looked at with suspicion, and fear and outright hatred. That didn't happen with Germans or Italians because they looked like the rest of America," said Takei.

Takei is 77 and credits his energy and health to following the laws of nature; eat properly, exercise properly, rest properly, and keep the mind engaged," he said.

George Takei also talked about marriage equality, LGBTQ rights, and who his role model is and how the documentary came about.

It's called "To be Takei," and it premieres at 7 p.m. at Harkins Shea in Scottsdale.

Takei and his husband, Brad will then hold a Q&A session after the screening.
