Two arrested in DeKalb carjacking, grandfather fights back

Posted: Updated:
LITHONIA, Ga. - Police say two men got into a shootout with a Lithonia grandfather, carjacked the driver of an AT&T van, then took DeKalb County Police on a chase on a major interstate.

Police said Kelvin Brown, 23, and Justin Williams, 25, may have been planning to rob Luther Tookes, 71, when he pulled into the driveway of his Lithonia home. Tookes had his 9-year-old grandson in the backseat when he saw the men in a Lexus outside his home.

Tookes got suspicious that the men were up to no good, so he did the first thing that came to mind.

"As soon as I saw him pull out a gun, I put it in reverse and rammed their car," said Tookes.

The grandfather and two men then exchanged gunfire, according to police. Tookes was grazed in the head and taken to the hospital.

Police say the grandfather's injuries are non-life-threatening. He is expected to make a full recovery.

The two suspects then fled Glencroft Place, and carjacked the driver of an AT&T van a short distance away. That driver was injured in the leg.

Investigators followed the stolen van around Memorial Avenue and Second Avenue, outside of East Atlanta, thanks to a tracking system.

Williams jumped out of the van near Creekview Drive and Sandy Woods Lane. FOX 5 was there as police arrested him.

Brown continued northbound on I-285 where officers boxed the van in before Chamblee Tucker Road.

He was pulled from the van and arrested.

All lanes of traffic were shut down for a short time during the suspect's arrest.

Brown was charged with armed robbery, three counts of aggravated assault, and one count of aggravated assault on a police officer.

Williams was charged with armed robbery and three counts of aggravated assault.
