Grand expansion; GCU arena grows

PHOENIX (KSAZ) - Grand Canyon University saw it's enrollment jump by more than 30%, the University also has a new expanded arena.

"It's only a years old but Grand Canyon University Arena is getting a bug makeover. The seating is going from about 4,500 seats to 7,000. How did they do it?

"We took out suites and added seats on the lower level, then we added an entire second level," said Brian Mueller.

What that means that an arena already rocking last year with head coach Dan Majerle will get even louder this year.

It's not just seats, the arena is getting a new basketball floor, it's the one used at the NBA all star game this season.

There is also some new retractable seating that can move out of the way if concerts are held there.

"So this is going to be about more than basketball, we view this as one of the best mid-sized facilities in the country, and we are going to use it for mainly basketball and music," said Mueller.

Coach Majerle is impressed with his team's upgraded home.

"You know I've played all over the world, I really have, nothing equates to an NBA arena, but as far as colleges, I don't see anything better," said Majerle

GCU is breaking in the arena Saturday night with a concer to welcome students to the school year. It's featuring the band Switchfoot.
