Driver trapped in semi for 2 1/2 hours after I-94 rollover

WADSWORTH, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) - A semi rolled over and crashed into a heavily wooded area on the west side of Interstate 94 near north suburban Wadsworth during the Friday morning rush.

The truck driver, who was headed south near Route 173, was trapped inside his cab for two and a half hours while firefighters worked to get him out, the Lake County News-Sun is reporting.

“He was a very lucky individual,” said Mark Kirscchoffer, fire chief with the Newport Township Fire Protection District.

The truck's cab came to rest in the woods about 9 a.m. after snapping large trees that then toppled onto the cab.

“He was in the woods with trees on top of him,” Kirscchoffer said. “We were concerned for him because of the amount of time he was entrapped.”

During the extrication effort, emergency crews had to reduce the number of I-94 lanes to two. The driver remained conscious and was taken to Advocate Condell Medical center in Libertyville.

Firefighters had to cut down several large trees to free him. Crews from Gurnee, Winthrop Harbor, Zion, Great Lakes, Waukegan, Beach Park, Lake Villa, Antioch and Wisconsin assisted in the response.
