Northville man gets 20 to 40 years for sexually abusing teen, 15

CITY OF DETROIT - A Northville man was sentenced to 20 to 40 years in prison for a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old teen Friday in Wayne County Circuit Court.

Emily Lalinsky lashed out at Robert Messer, 37, who was once a family friend.

"It's absolutely devastating, it's awful and I can't stand it," she said in a victim impact statement. "And everyday I have more and more anger welling up inside of me because of what he did to me and what he did to my family and he doesn't even care."

It is believed Messer started having sex with her when she was just 11 or 12 years old. The relationship was only revealed when she ran off with Messer last year.

Her family, at the time, had no idea. They only knew the two were missing and went on national television pleading for their safe return.

Messer and Lalinsky were discovered a couple of days later in his truck in a field. They had wounds from trying to commit suicide allegedly because Lalinsky was pregnant.

Now, she's a 15-year-old mother angry at what's been taken from her - her innocence, her childhood, her trust.

"I've lost everything and while he gets to sit rotting in a cell I have to deal with it day after day. I have to wake up looking at the child that he gave to me."

Lalinsky's siblings and mother, also in tears, talked about the man who had been a friend from church and father figure in their lives for 10 years who, almost all the while, betrayed them.

Perhaps the harshest criticism for Messer came from the judge, who presided over Messer's trial that ended with a hung jury.  His sentencing is now the result of Messer pleading guilty in exchange for a lighter sentence.

"I was going to make sure that you never ever ever saw the light of day outside of jail cell for the rest of your life," she said. "If there was ever a case of predatory conduct, Robert Louis Messer is it."

"I think that he gained the trust of this family and the trust of this young girl for no purpose other than to have his sexual way with her."
