"The Purge" Social Media Posts Spark Fear

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA - A fantasy sci-fi movie called "The Purge: Anarchy" in theaters now is causing not just fright but fear both on and off screen.  The plot surrounds one day when committing any crime is legal and law enforcement is suspended.

Raekwon Purnell just saw the movie.

"It's crazy. It's really good. If that could actually happen I would be scared," he said.

Some people are threatening to make the movie plot real. FOX 29 found several posts on social media. Captioned posters are popping up on Facebook and Twitter threatening a "Purge Day" in more than a dozen cities since the sequel debuted in July. And now the Philadelphia region has been added to the list.

Different dates are going around, but the earliest cites this Friday.

"It's crazy people out here so who knows but I don't think anything will happen," said Purnell.

Philadelphia Police, it's Criminal Intelligence Unit and Homeland Security-Counter Terrorism Bureau are aware of the threat but say there's no credible information to suggest it will happen. A spokesperson tells FOX 29 that officers will be vigilant though.

"It's a little bit scary that people take these things that seriously and social media helps it to spread," said Steven Glanz who also saw the movie recently.

"I don't know if they're going to do this whole thing but I know that mentality exists and the potential absolutely is there," said moviegoer Alvara Watson.  Others are relieved to hear police will still be keeping a watchful eye.

"Oh yeah, definitely. Everybody should take it seriously because they're talking about killing people and because there are crazy people out here," said Purnell.
