Domestic assault charges dropped against Dante Cunningham - KMSP-TV

Charges dropped against Timberwolves forward, why he plans to sue

Posted: Updated:
MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) -

Charges against Minnesota Timberwolves forward Dante Cunningham are being dropped and he plans to sue his accuser after he was arrested and charged with felony domestic assault in April.

His girlfriend at the time accused him of choking her at a home in Medina, Minn. and on Tuesday, felony domestic assault was dropped for lack of proof. Cunningham's agent told the Associated Press reports he plans to sue the accuser in a civil case to clear his name. Cunningham said he also wants to "show people it's wrong to abuse an already overworked legal system."

He became an unrestricted free agent after last season and hasn't secured a contract with the Timberwolves while the investigation has been underway.

Cunningham flew down to join his team in Orlando to face the Magic on April 5 after being released from jail -- he could not be deactivated for the game because league rules say it could be viewed as a form of punishment. He started and tallied 12 points, 6 rebounds and 3 blocks in 34 minutes. Cunningham averaged 6.3 points, 4.1 rebounds and 20.2 minutes in 81 games for the Timberwolves last season and earned $2.1 million after the Timberwolves exercised the team option on his contract.
