Control your debit or credit card by remote control

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Oh, that awful feeling when you think your credit or debit card is safely tucked into your wallet, but it's still shopping. Somebody, somewhere has got your card number and is using it. What if you could turn off that card? I mean, put it back in your wallet then temporarily deactivate it until you are ready to use it again?

"Oh, that's one tap away. With a single tap on this application you can turn off the card."

Rachna Ahlawat co-founded a company called OnDot Systems that provides the brain power behind an app that many banks and credit unions are starting to use. It allows user to manage credit and debit cards by controlling when, where and how your cards can be used - remotely.

We watched it in action by placing an order at a local restaurant. Ms. Ahlawat, through her bank's app, has turned off her debit card. No one, not even her, is supposed to be able to use it. She pulls out her card to pay for a drink.

"It didn't go through," said the young woman at the register when the card was denied.

Instantaneously, the bank sends the cardholder a notification that someone has tried to use the card. But with a quick swipe on her app, the card is activated.

"It worked," said Jackie at Mellow Mushroom in North Druid Hills.

Our demonstration attracts the attention of other customers.

"Yep. It is cool. It'll help me control my money spending," said Carolina O'Connor waiting for her take-out order.

She's right. It can help her do that. The inventor's daughter just started driving, so her teenager's card has limits. It can only be used close to home at gas stations and certain retail stores, and it has a $100 limit.

"But if she does have to make a purchase online for her textbook or other things, changing that setting is just one click away,"

And there's more, especially if you're a traveler. You can set geographical parameters. Set your card to only work in metro Atlanta or a regular traveling location. If your card somehow ends up in Vegas, well, then it won't work.

So next time you go to your wallet and realize you can't find your debit card, don't panic. Just like a light - one click - and you turn it off.

And it's coming soon to a bank near you.
