Will political eyebrows be raised over SOS candidate's client list?

Posted: Updated:
Democrats do not appear to be concerned that one of their statewide candidates has done legalwork for Matty Moroun and the former Mayor of  Detroit.

It is not a major issue at this read, but just for the sake of discussion - let's review some of the lawyer-ing done by Secretary of State candidate Godfrey Dillard.

He's a Detroit attorney and lawyers represent clients; it's what they do but when one of those clients is the litigious owner of the Ambassador Bridge and the other was Kwame Kilpatrick, will political eyebrows be raised?

One Democratic player wonders if Dillard could take some heat and could the rest of the ticket be forced to defend him?

When the Detroit City Council was making noises about ousting his Honor, or not-so-honorable Mayor Kilpatrick, it was Mr. Dillard representing city government who argued against that.

As for his legalwork on behalf of Mr. Moroun, one would have to ask: What does that have to do with Mr. Dillard wanting to beat Ruth Johnson to be SOS?

The party was fully aware of Mr. Dillard's history and while no one will speak on the record about this, it's fair to conclude if anybody was upset with his legal representation, the announcement of his candidacy would have been scrubbed or at least reviewed.

Meanwhile the party is getting ever closer to finalizing the entire ticket for the fall.  Work continues on the so-called education posts including MSU, Wayne State and U of M Boards and the State Board of Education. Plus the D's need one more candidate to run for an eight  year term on the state supreme court.

There are rumblings that there may be some back room grumbling about returning former MSU football coach George Perles to the ticket. He asserts he is running again. Could somebody try to stop him?

Party Chair Lon Johnson advises he will not be part of a dump George effort.
