Arsonist destroys new Plymouth Creek playground

PLYMOUTH, Minn. (KMSP) -

Hundreds of thousands of dollars in playground equipment were destroyed by flames over the weekend, and it was no accident. In fact, investigators say they need to track down an arsonist.

Hundreds of children were looking forward to trying out the new equipment at Plymouth Creek playground this month. The old equipment has already been shipped out to make playgrounds overseas, but instead of becoming a site for child's play, police say someone -- or a group of vandals -- put a stop to the fun before it could really get started.

"This place would be packed," James Ojala said of the now-deserted park. "I coach sports around here, been around for a long time and it's really disheartening for the kids to see it."

The rubble and charred mess left behind was brand-new play equipment, and the final assembly was set to be complete on Friday morning, according to Plymouth Police Sgt. Chris Kuklok. At about 2 a.m. on Friday, however, an arsonist made sure those plans went up in smoke.

The fire caused an estimated $200,000 in damages. No one was injured, but none of the burned parts are salvageable. Now, Plymouth parents who have fond memories of the park are upset that their children are being deprived of the same because of one destructive act. Meanwhile, police say they are taking the crime seriously and warn that the person responsible could face felony charges.
