CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Chicago police are investigating the death of an Avalon Park woman whose body was found underneath a burning car in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood.

Police identify the victim as Sherita Smith. Smith's body was found burned to death under a burning SUV on the 8500 block of Honore Street. The discovery was made early Friday morning by residents of the neighborhood.

A family friend said Smith was the mother of three children and spent most of her time working with disabled children.

Chicago police said its arson unit responded to the scene and is investigating what happened.

Joy Wilkin's husband saw the aftermath.

“She was unclothed, just a horrible site, it's really weird. I know things happen all over the city of Chicago, there's really no safe place, but for this to happen right outside my back door, it's really hard to take,” said Wilkins in an interview with FOX 32's Tisha Lewis.

“It's a terrible, it's a tragedy what has happened. Our heart goes out again to Sherita's family and she will surely be missed at the Chicago Lighthouse,” said Jeanette Bonzani, Smith's former co-worker.

Smith spent several years working at the Chicago Lighthouse for the Blind. Co-workers said Smith's funeral will take place sometime next week.
