Police: 171 iPads Disappear From Willingboro School District Warehouse

Posted: Updated:
WILLINGBORO, N.J. -  Police are trying to figure out what happened to 171 brand new iPads missing from the Willingboro School District warehouse.

The Apple iPad is a hot commodity in the technology world. So much so that Willingboro School officials ordered 171 of them for schools around the district only to discover they have disappeared.

Taxpayers were stunned to hear that the 171 iPads, valued at about $400 apiece, vanished from the school district in recent months.

“They should find out where they went. First thing, be sure that you got them,” said Willingboro taxpayer Ben Johnson.

“You would think that something of that magnitude there's a system of log in, tracking numbers. Things of that nature," said Willingboro taxpayer David Taylor.

Police aren't sure if they were stolen out of schools or simply walked away from the school district warehouse on Industrial Drive.

David Taylor has a couple of grandchildren in Willingboro schools.

When he heard the news Monday about the vanishing iPads, his first thoughts turned to how that loss will affect students.

“I worry about the kids, it's for the kids, it's for their education, it's for their future,” said Taylor.

Willingboro police say they were notified back in February about the missing i[ads. Detectives began to investigate, but the trail went cold.

“They should find out who took them, what happened. The person that's responsible for them disappearing should be punished,” said

“Whoever took them i hope they catch them and they spend time in jail,”

No one at school district headquarters would comment Monday. The superintendent was out of town. Gates and doors at the warehouse were wide open Monday. There didn't appear to be any surveillance cameras, at least on the outside. Police say no surveillance video has been turned over to detectives.

If you have any information, please contact the Willingboro Police Department at 609-877-2200.
