Mesa Fire introduces life vest loaner program at apartments

Posted: Updated:
MESA, Ariz. - Apartment complex owners are teaming up with the Mesa Fire Department to prevent drownings.

They're offering life jackets to residents while they spend time at the pool.

The simple buckling of a life vest could reduce the number of drownings in Arizona.

As of August, 35 people in our state have died in water related accidents including 11 kids, according to the Children's Safety Zone.

"The apartment complexes and the apartment communities are paying for the vests and we come out and we educate tenants on how to use the vest and how to have the proper fit" said Lela Hinds of the Mesa Fire Department.

Sun Valley Ranch apartment complex, near University and Power, is one of two kick starting the life vest loaner program with Mesa Firefighters.

They offer 12 vests in a variety of sizes, and swimmers can borrow them whenever the pool is open.

"We're hoping that every day someone is checking one out. We see kids out here all the time who are running around and when we have more than one kid sometimes you can lose eye contact with them and so if they have something on it's just safer," said Joann Basham a community manager at Sun Valley Ranch.

It's a concept that parent's love according to Tasha Crofton,"I'm really happy they decided to do something like this and bring awareness to people here so I think it's important."

The Mesa Fire Department hopes to go city wide with the plan and set an example, that fire departments across the state will follow.
