WILMINGTON, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A tree fell and trapped a person underneath as she was walking her dog in north suburban Wilmette on Monday morning.

The victim -- a female whose age was not immediately known -- was walking her dog about 8 a.m. when a large tree fell near the intersection of 5th Street and Greenleaf Avenue, Lt. Robert Brill of the Wilmette Fire Department said.

She became trapped, but was able to free herself with the help of police, Brill said.

She was taken to a hospital with minor injuries, Brill said. The dog was not injured.

“The condition of the tree had a lot to do with it,” Brill said. “It has been decaying for some time.”
