DETROIT (WJBK) - Authorities are investigating a shooting on Detroit's east side where they say a 10-year-old has shot his father in the back.

Police say the father and his long-time girlfriend, who shared custody of the child, were in a domestic dispute at the house in the 2900 block of Buena Vista when the boy grabbed a 9 mm.

Police have interviewed the boy and say he told police the gun went off by mistake. He has been released from police custody to a family member.

"During that altercation, young man at the scene became concerned apparently for his mother's safety. He stated that he picked up a gun and it accidentally went off at that time," says Detroit Police Captain Nick Kyriacou.

The boy's family tells Fox 2's Roop Raj they also believe the gun went off accidentally, and that the shooting was a mistake.

The man is in critical condition in the hospital. Raj reports the father may possibly be paralyzed.
