Memorial to Officer Joe Bergeron restored

Posted: Updated:

Two friends say the St. Paul memorial honoring a Maplewood officer killed in the line of duty should have been restored a long time ago -- but since no one else appeared to be stepping up, they took care of it themselves.

The big rock at the corner of Arlington and English is a reminder of a story -- but for months, no one could see it. The stone stands as a memorial for Sgt. Joe Bergeron, who was murdered by a carjacking suspect in 2010. Last year, vandals drenched the memorial with white paint.

While the paint was removed, the water-blasting process also stripped away most of the black paint on the lettering. Over the weekend, retired St. Paul Police Officer Tim Bradley and his friend, Linda Schwartzbauer decided they were tired of waiting for someone else to make things right. So, they took it upon themselves to go over all 204 letters and numbers.

Over several hours, the two meticulously filled in each letter with their brushes. The two friends told Fox 9 News that the recent shooting death of Mendota Heights Police Officer Scott Patrick gave them the motivation. Now, they know many of the community members who thanked them while they worked will once again be able to read about another fallen hero in Minnesota and remember his sacrifice.
