Investigation after doctors discover chemical burns on Novi dog's body

Posted: Updated:
(WJBK) - When 4-year-old Jasper was surrendered to Providing for Paws for treatment, the vets and volunteers couldn't believe what they found when they went to pick him up.

Jasper was surrendered Monday after his owner, who lives in Novi, called to say she was unable to afford medical treatment. The owner told Providing for Paws Jasper had mange, a skin disease caused by mites, but says he was full of flies because of the smell.

"None of us had ever actually seen mange burn the skin like this," says Joanne Dixon, founder of Providing for Paws. "He was in shock when we brought him in. His heart rate was 180; his fever had jumped up to 105 [degrees] even on antibiotics."

After placing Jasper, already emaciated, in foster care, just a day later the dog could barely lift his head, was unable to breathe and shivering in pain.

Providing For Paws rushed him to Ann Arbor where doctors shaved him and discovered what he has isn't mange at all.

"Sixty percent of his body is burned, mainly on the top and on the face," says Dixon. "It almost looked like something was eating away around the [eye] lid."

Doctors are awaiting results of a skin biopsy, but say a slow-burning chemical, like drain cleaner, may have been used. Doctors say it may have been used in attempts to kill mange, or was accidentally or maliciously poured on Jasper.

Oakland County Animal Control is investigating the owner for possible abuse and neglect.

Jasper is expected to recover within the next few months but Providing for Paws will need help to cover those vet bills that could reach $15,000 dollars.

If you would like to make a donation, a fundraiser has been set up on online.

Hendrick Boards, an eco-friendly apparel company, has also pledged to donate $10 of every purchase to save Jasper. Click here to learn more.
