NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) - The father of two boys from the Philadelphia area who were at the center of an Amber Alert on Thursday was found dead on Staten Island with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, said police.

Keith Belajonas, 32, is accused of killing his wife in the couple's Pennsylvania apartment several hours earlier.

An Amber Alert was issued for the boys who are 4 and 5 years old.  Police said Belajonas was driving an SUV with the children inside and was likely headed to New York.

At about 6 a.m., the boys were left at a CVS on Victory Blvd. on Staten Island.  An employee told police that Belajonas, who had a gun but didn't display it in a threatening manner, took with him cigarettes and a can of beer. They didn't say what his relationship was to the CVS employee, reported the Associated Press.

A short time later, Belajonas was found dead inside his vehicle on a dead-end road in the Eltingville section of Staten Island and about five miles from the CVS store.

The children were taken to a local hospital for observation and were said to be safe and sound. Detectives from the Philadelphia Police Department were expected to speak with the children.

"Apparently the older of the two is telling everybody about `Daddy killed Mommy' type thing. So obviously that's very traumatic for them," said Superintendent Michael Chitwood of Upper Darby police.

"The goal now is to unite them with somebody, whether it's a family member or whatever. We've been in contact with the dead woman's father."

Police in Pennsylvania were called to the family's home in the Drexel Hill area at about 2:30 a.m. The boys' mother was found dead inside of a second-floor apartment, said police.

"One of the occupants of the building heard the struggle, heard the shot," said Chitwood.

"Next thing you know is he hears a guy coming down with two little kids. One of the children states, 'Is mommy dead? Is mommy dead?' And out the door they go."

Police released a photo of Belajonas and pointed to another on the social network MySpace. In the photo, Belajonas is holding two, semi-automatic guns and is bare-chested.

In a post to his Facebook page, Belajonas wrote “Had an argument. She was cheating on me. I won."

The Associated Press and FOX affiliate WTXF contributed to this report.

Report: health risks at some nail salons

One of the most surprising findings in a report from the New York City public advocate is that city officials have virtually no authority over how nail salons are run. The city can't enforce standards like they do with restaurants, so it's clearly a case of beauty buyer beware. We get our nails done without thinking too much about it.
