Bobby Ferguson's family in court fighting to keep house, cash

Posted: Updated:
CITY OF DETROIT -
Former city contractor Bobby Ferguson's family was in federal court Wednesday asking a judge to keep their house on Detroit's west side.

Ferguson was convicted of extortion and racketeering last year and sentenced to 21 years in federal prison for crimes committed during the Kwame Kilpatrick regime.

Now his ex-wife and three children are fighting to get seized property back from  federal authorities.

Claims were filed by the family to keep the house and the hundreds of thousands of dollars that had been seized as well as heavy earth-moving equipment from Ferguson Enterprises.

Lawyers for the Fergusons think the feds are going too far.

Judge Nancy Edmunds said that both sides have three months  to work on their arguments.

Prosecutors have said they are willing to work on a settlement for the Ferguson home. Other issues may be harder to resolve.

Ferguson family attorney Todd Perkins said, "They have a right to make a claim and there may be something that gets worked out or there may be a trial in the future."
