CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A hair products manufacturer is facing nearly $60,000 in proposed penalties after being cited for health and safety violations at its Chicago facility.

AFAM Concept Inc. was cited for 12 serious, one repeat and two other-than-serious safety and health violations following a complaint inspection, according to a statement from the Occupational Health and Safety Administration. The company manufactures, distributes and markets beauty and personal care products.

The proposed penalties total $59,700, according to the statement.

OSHA claims workers were exposed to dangerous machinery that pose amputation, fall and respiratory hazards.

An inspection on April 29 found that AFAM failed to develop procedures to protect works from moving machine parts during servicing and maintenance, according to the statement. The company was cited for a similar violation in June 2012 at the same facility.

The company was also cited for several other violations, including failing to maintain injury and illness logs and failing to inspect powered industrial vehicles.
