Hundreds Camp Out At Mint For JFK Commemorative Coin

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

Hundreds of people lined up outside the U.S. Mint to get their hands on a special 50th anniversary John F. Kennedy half-dollar.

They began waiting on the Old City Philadelphia sidewalks at 2 p.m. Monday – some with blankets, lounge chairs and tents – to purchase the commemorative Kennedy gold coin.

The line for the 24-karat, 50-cent piece, worth approximately $1,240, eventually reached between 300 and 400 people by Tuesday morning ahead of a sale that began at noon.

But not everyone was waiting in line for free. Some members of the group were hired by a coin collector to purchase the coin for his business and signed a waiver that they will hand it over to him once they get it.

Some people tell us they plan to use the money they earn today to pay bills or put towards their savings accounts. Other people said they appreciate the history of it all.

A few independents showed up and said they felt discouraged like they weren't going to get a chance at the coin because of those who were hired by the coin collector.

FOX 29's Jennifer Joyce has more details in this video report Tuesday morning from outside the mint.
