Accused drunk driver posts smiley face with photo of wrecked car after deadly crash

BROOKLYN PARK, Minn. (KMSP) -

Mike VanWagner knows he made a mistake. Two mistakes, actually.

According to the Minnesota State Patrol, VanWagner, 24, was involved in a pair of crashes on Highway 252 in Brooklyn Park, Minn. on the afternoon of July 22. One of those crashes critically injured 16-year-old Champlin Park High School student Jason McCarthy, who later died of his injuries.

But between the crash and McCarthy’s death, VanWagner showed little remorse. He posted a photo of his wrecked car on Facebook, below a message punctuated with a smiley face emoticon: “That’s her front end after I got done with her lol.” VanWagner’s post has since been deleted, replaced by more reflective messages:

“God why you have to let all the good people die and all the evil ones survive???”

“You know during the accident I couldn't see what was going on around me all I seen was my son.”

In an interview with the Minneapolis Star Tribune, VanWagner said he knows he’s looking at time in prison, so he’s spending as much time as possible with his 18-month-old son.

VanWagner was driving on a revoked license and the arresting trooper detected the odor of alcohol. Charges have not yet been filed.
