Country Music Superstar Blake Shelton Performs Free Concert In AC

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. - Blake Shelton took the stage for a free concert in Atlantic City on Thursday night.

City officials hope this will bring some positive vibes to a shore point that's taken several hits this year.

FOX 29's Drew Dickman spoke with excited fans.

“Why can’t you just have a few." Shelton sang.

Blake Shelton had the Atlantic City Beach rocking.

"I came here to drink and play country music man!" he told the massive crowd.

Thousands of Beach chairs and umbrellas filled the shore as the country music superstar played some of his favorite hits.

People also took in the live music from boats and hotel rooftops.

Others that couldn’t get a ticket partied along the boardwalk.

It’s a welcome sight, because excitement in AC has been fleeting in 2014.

Possibly a third of the east coast gambling hub’s casino could be closed by the end of the summer.

Mayor Don Guardian says free concerts are one of the ways the city plans to reinvent itself.

“This is exactly what the new Atlantic City is all about. Things to do besides casinos and gaming and having Blake here and 100 thousand extra people is the way we’re rolling out the red carpet for everyone to come down," Guardian said.

If you ask the thousands of people who watched the country crooner from Oklahoma, the plan is off to a great start.

“He’s awesome. It was a good show that I could hear," Jennifer Herman said.

Herman and her family drove six hours from Pittsburgh for the free show.

They will be staying the night in AC, as will the Ruskeys of the Scranton-Wilkes Barre area.

“It was enjoyable. I think it’s going to bring a lot of business to the area and you see a lot f people here buying different things. I think it’s a great thing for the community," Dave Ruskey said.

Local Sherrise Moten wants to see more of these kinds of events to prop up her beleaguered city.

“This brings people and dollars and revenue. So everybody wins," Moten said.

Lady Antebellum will also play a free concert in Atlantic City Sunday evening.
