Teen facing attempted murder, arson charges after fire at Woodbridge home

Posted: Updated:

Neighbors say an alleged old flame is accused of setting his ex-lover’s Woodbridge house on fire.

Four adults and a juvenile inside escaped the Virginia home, but were almost burned alive. The 17-year-old who police say caused it all remains behind bars.

“The flames were just rolling out of that window there,” said neighbor Lucy Champion. “I just started crying. I just felt so bad about it.”

Champion can still hear the screams of her 18-year-old neighbor and the young women's four friends running for their lives early Sunday morning from the Woodbridge home in the 13000 block of Marbury Lane.

“She had run out screaming,” said Champion. “That's when my son heard her.”

The fire is linked to an argument involving residents and a 17-year-old suspect. Cops say the teen showed up drunk at the home in the middle of the night. The male was arrested and then released to his parents.

A couple hours later, he showed up at the home again and this time lit it all on fire.

But many in the neighborhood believe his act was nothing more than a crime of passion -- in which they say the 17-year-boy was romantically linked to the 18-year-old girl.

“My friend told me that the girl that lived there, her ex-boyfriend got mad and burned the house,” said neighbor David Echeverria.

No other homes were damaged.

All of the adults were not hurt, but the juvenile did receive minor injuries.

As for the suspect, Prince William County police say he will remain in the juvenile detention center. He is now facing arson and attempted murder charges and manufacturing an explosive device.
