Sexual harassment claims on CTA underreported, report says

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Experts say the number of sexual harassment incidents on Chicago's transit system is hard to establish because many often go unreported, according to an article by RedEye Chicago.

Experts tell the paper that many women choose not to notify authorities because they're not sure whether the act was criminal in nature.

The report cites one instance where the act was so subtle, the victim didn't realize what had happened to her until it was over.

"Maybe just as a woman, we're kind of desensitized to the fact that guys are sometimes creeps," the woman told RedEye Chicago.

An expert told the paper that sexual harassment has become so commonplace in Chicago's public spaces that some women view it as a "rite of passage."

There have been nine harassment complaints received by the CTA this year, according to the report. In 2013, there were 18 complaints filed, down from 21 in 2012.

The CTA is currently in the middle of its "see something, say something" campaign and encourages all riders to report incidents to a train or bus operator, police, or agency customer service by phone or online.
