Neighbors tie pink ribbons to remember murdered Armada teen

Posted: Updated:
ARMADA, Mich. (WJBK) - The community in Armada Township is pulling together to support the family of murdered 14-year-old April Millsap.

Neighbors are tying bows of hope and support in April's favorite color, pink, along Main Street leading to Macomb Orchard Trail where April used to walk her dog, Penny, daily.

"It's very unnerving to know that something so awful happened so close to home," says Jennifer Gregg, whose daughter went to school with April.

With each ribbon is a reminder of that day that most can't forget when April was murdered while walking Penny Thursday night. Her dog alerted joggers to her body, which was found in a wooded area about 15 feet from the trail.

"You can't imagine, I mean, I can't imagine losing a child. You know, it's just not supposed to happen," says April's Godmother Chris Shoemaker.

Although police are not revealing details of her death, investigators say they're working around the clock to find her killer.

"We're just following up on tips. We've received over five [hundred] to six hundred tips now, so we're getting a lot of tips as far as this investigation goes," says Michigan State Police Lt. Michael Shaw.

More tips have come since Sunday after police released a sketch of a person of interest. Investigators are also still looking for information on a gray van seen parked near where April's body was found. Police have recovered more evidence, revealing a text message sent to her boyfriend the night she was killed saying she may be abducted.

"We don't know who sent this text message. We know the text message came from her phone, but we don't know if the killer sent the message, if April sent the message, if she was walking with a friend that sent the message," says Shaw.

Meanwhile, a community quietly mourns and prays for the family of April Millsap.

"Waiting, waiting. That's the hard part is the waiting," says Shoemaker.

"I'm just very sorry and I hope that they catch this person," says Gregg.

The community also a message to her killer.

"We won't let this - allow this to happen again," says Jean Walkowski, an Armada resident.

"We have to forgive, but we need justice. We need closure. We need peace of mind," says Shoemaker.

Police are still asking for tips in the investigation. If you have information you're asked to call 1-877-616-4677. Any tip is worthwhile.
