Lake Calhoun beach closed by high E. coli levels

Posted: Updated:

One of three beaches at Lake Calhoun is closed because of high e-coli levels. The problem is people are missing the warning. Thomas Beach at Lake Calhoun has been closed since Thursday but with all the activity on the lake it’s easy to miss the small signs in the sand at shore which is why visitors say the city needs to do more to keep them informed and safe.

“I didn’t even know there were high levels of bacteria and I live around here,” said Charlotte Paguyo. “I come here quite frequently so surprised they’re not doing more to alert people.”

A representative with the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board in a statement told FOX 9 they’ve been “very proactive in monitoring and conducting weekly samples of all of their beaches”.

As for the cause of the elevated bacteria, the Park and Rec Board say typically “water levels, storm water runoff or waterfowl” are the bit culprits.

Calhoun 32nd and North beaches are still open.

You can check the water quality status before heading out to the lake here.
