33 suspects arrested with ties to Latin Counts street gang

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) - United States Attorney Barbara McQuade stood with Detroit's police chief James Craig, members of the state police and FBI to announce 33 indictments tied to a gang believed to be responsible for the murder of 20 year old Mustafa Al-Yasiri and other crimes.

"According to the indictment, several members of the Latin Counts gang assaulted the victim and then one member jumped out of a vehicle and shot and killed him," McQuade says.

The alleged gang members are also accused of robberies, burglaries, gun thefts and drug sales.

Local, state and federal agencies joined forces in an operation called Detroit One to make the arrests. No mug shots were provided but 23-year-old Victor Vasquez of Detroit was charged with transporting the gun used in Al-Yasiri's murder. Four other suspects from Dearborn, Ecorse, Lincoln Park and Detroit are also believed to be connected to the murder and racketeering.

According to this indictment, more than two dozen other people are also charged with running an armed drug trafficking organization distributing heroin and cocaine. It's alleged one of the suspects hid the drugs and money at a home in Taylor.

"The indictment talks about how the gang is very protective of its turf and that it would intimidate rival gang members, but also residents of the community," McQuade says.

"When we look at what we're doing here in Detroit, really [is] dismantling and disrupting a violent street gang. It frankly has been affecting the quality of lives of so many in southwest Detroit," says Craig.

Police would not say how many Latin Counts members remain or how the arrests will impact the gang's operations, but they did say this joint effort to root out violent criminals has resulted in more than 140 arrests in the last year alone.
