New Arizona laws go into effect

PHOENIX (KSAZ) -

On July 24, new laws governing Arizona went into effect.

The laws cover things ranging from alcohol consumption to penalties for posting nude photos online, and the rules impact everyone.

County Attorney Bill Montgomery explained what's being called the "revenge porn law."

"It initially will require someone who has been victimized by an act of revenge porn," said Montgomery.

The law will make it a felony to show or distribute a nude photo of somebody, on purpose, without that person's consent.

According to Montgomery, the crime is more serious if the person in the picture can be recognized, "There is a distinction in the level of the offense depending on whether or not you can recognize who the individual is."

However, the law only applies to photos and videos that remain online after the law went into effect.

It's also now illegal to sell certain over the counter cough medicines to minors.  Children under the age of 18 can't buy medicines that contain the suppressant dextromethorphan.  The suppressant is safe in small doses, but causes hallucinations when it's abused.

Another new law now on the books is that anyone operating a boat or motorized craft will be required to submit to a drug or alcohol test at any time. If the boater refuses, they will automatically receive a civil penalty whether they're impaired or not.

One other large change in the law is for beer drinkers.

Restrictions on the type of container used to carry out beer have been removed.  Until now, containers had to be made of glass, now they can be made from stainless steel or other materials.

Finally, you may be seeing more golf carts on the road.
People can now legally drive the carts and small electric vehicles in age-restricted communities like Sun City and Sun Lakes.
