Handmade furniture from Detroit reclaimed lumber

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) - A new brand of furniture is made with wood from deconstructed Detroit homes.

"Typically, the homes were built in the 1910s, 1920s, so already it's 100 years old that this lumber has been in a house somewhere serving as somebody's homeplace," says James Willer, a fourth generation carpenter. He is one of the owners of Workshop.

The tables are assembled in a first-floor workshop in The Fisher Building. The welded steel frames come from a small, family owned business. Each piece is stamped with the actual address of the home the wood came from.

Willer considers this process a third life for the old growth lumber, known for it's character, nail holes and even the old sawmill marks. The wood has been around for more than a century and would otherwise end up in landfills.

"Its first life was in a forest for a couple hundred years. Its second life was as shelter for a home or a family. It's third life as a signature piece in your house," Willer says.

Workshop recently partnered with Gardner White Furniture so you'll see some of these pieces in showrooms around town.

Dining tables start at about a thousand dollars and the deconstruction process helps create jobs.
