No suit filed Tuesday, lawyer recommends Kluwe, Vikings keep talking

Posted: Updated:
MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) -

The attorney for former Minnesota Vikings punter Chris Kluwe recommended the Vikings and Kluwe continue with their conversations amid an apparent pending lawsuit against the team.

Attorney Clayton Halunen said last week that “Kluwe’s only recourse is to file a lawsuit against the Vikings,” but he told Fox 9 News Tuesday he recommends the Vikings and Kluwe continue talking.

"I have spoken with the Vikings lawyer Joe Anthony and we have agreed to recommend to our clients that they continue with their conversations. We will not be taking any action pending the completion of those discussions," he said in a statement Tuesday.

In a January column on Deadspin.com, Kluwe accused Vikings special teams coach Mike Priefer of making homophobic remarks to him and other Vikings players and berating him in front of his teammates over his support of same sex marriage legislation. He also accused the Vikings of cutting him from the roster for being an outspoken advocate of gay rights.

“Players who get caught smoking weed or DUI get 4 games, and you're telling me the guy who made a comment like 'let's round up all the gays put them on an island nuke it till it glows' -- he's only going to get a slap on the wrist?” Kluwe said in a phone interview.

Priefer has been suspended for three regular season games, but Halunen requested the full, 150-page investigation and Kluwe contends he did the right thing by coming forward about the allegations.
