Veteran Says He Escaped Attempted Armed Robber at Fast Food Drive-Thru

EGG HARBOR TWP., N.J. -

All a 59-year-old Navy veteran wanted was a cheeseburger when he placed an order at the Burger King drive-thru on Tilton Road in Egg Harbor Township; however, he got a brush with death on Sunday evening.

"I turn and he's in a set position. He pretty much looked like he knew what he was doing," said Daniel Danchak.

"I ordered and was going to get something else so I reached in my glove compartment. I turned around and a guy had what looked like a 9- millimeter in my face," said Daniel.

He was blindsided by an armed robber who he says appeared out of nowhere in the busy shopping strip. It was just after seven o'clock  and still daylight outside.

"The gun was not shaking whatsoever. The guy was very assured. He had a deep voice and he said give me all you got. I figured this was not his first rodeo," said Daniel.

Daniel, without hesitation, made a risky move.

"I popped the clutch, hit the gas, turned the corner and blew the horn and got inside the restaurant," he said.

Once he was inside, workers locked the doors and called police.

"You never know in those times what you're going to do. It's just a decision and I figured the more time I spent there if somebody scared him or something he might kill me by accident."

Daniel says he's a Navy veteran and served during the Vietnam era. He says he wasn't going out without a fight to save his life.

"I got a little granddaughter and I want to see her grow up. I had to make a move," said Daniel.

Police are reviewing surveillance video from cameras in the area. A manager at Burger King says the drive thru camera wasn't working at the time.
