Osseo 5th grader: 'They're just as smart as us, but they're put at a disadvantage'

OSSEO, Minn. (KMSP) -

When fifth-graders in the Osseo School District truly realized how lucky they were to be afforded such amazing educational opportunities, they decided to get up and give back. And they did that by raising $12,000 and sending school supplies to students in Mexico.

“They are just as smart as us, but they are put at a disadvantage when they don't get the school supplies,” Caden Levahn said.

At the little school in Sasaba Senora, Mexico, they have about 220 students, and for the past year, these Osseo kids have raised money to buy school supplies and other resources for these students. The project is called "Students Connecting Through International Service.”

“They don't just sit around listening to people complain anymore, they know they can do something,” Tammie Epley noted, impressed by the students’ initiative.

Students like Hailey Schleter, now in high school, says the experience still helps her today.

“Having everything that we have, it just makes me want to do more with what I do have,” she said.

This year, they wanted to add a little more “pop” to their giving, so the other schools in the district helped out, and now, a bright yellow school bus full of 30 computers is being driven to Mexico for the students to keep.
