Is your fitness tracker making you fat?

Posted: Updated:
(WJBK) - A fitness tracker is supposed to help you get fit, so why are some instead saying they're getting fat?

Many different devices on the market can help you count your steps and help track calories burned.

But lately, fitness bloggers and calorie counting websites have threads of people complaining their bands are backfiring. The complaints range from the apps telling them to eat more calories than they need, to others saying the calorie intake versus calorie outtake just doesn't add up.

While the bands help track weight and fitness, doctors say other variables you should consider are your genes, how many calories you burn at rest, how much you sleep and your stress levels.

"These are tracking devices. Use them to keep track of your behavior but don't let them determine your behavior," says Dr. Marty Lillystone, Beaumont exercise physiologist. He gives his high tech pedometer high praise, and says fitness trackers do make us more active.

"There are studies that tell us when somebody starts wearing a pedometer they become more active, so they're great tools," he says.

A Fitbit spokewoman says the company makes "the most consistently accurate activity trackers on the market, outperforming heart rate straps and treadmills that calculate calorie burn."
