10,000 SANDBAGS: The great wall of Prior Lake

Posted: Updated:
PRIOR LAKE, Minn. (KMSP) -

Residents in Prior Lake are rallying once again to fill thousands of sandbags to create ring dikes that will protect nearby homes from the rising water, and volunteers are turning up in droves to lend a hand.

"Sandbags are about 5 feet from my house," said Duane Stuckey, one of many residents whose homes are being threatened by the floodwaters. "My whole front yard is totally underwater."

Even though the water levels are dropping on Prior Lake, weeks have passed since a number of residents were able to drive to their doors. Stuckey explained that some have been using boats, but others have to walk through up to 3 feet of water to get back home -- and it could be that way for weeks more.

"They anticipate quite a while before it's gone," volunteer Angela Scheunemann said.

Now, volunteers are trying to reclaim the street by building a 650-foot wall. Then, they'll use pumps to move thousands of gallons of water to the other side.

"If you're going to be here, you're going to get wet," Scheunemann said with a laugh.

Dozens of volunteers have come out to help fill the estimated 10,000 sandbags they will need to build the barrier, and they have the system down to a science.

"They're doing great," volunteer Mike Ogdahl said. "All the guys are lifting sand -- even the guys with little muscles, big muscles. Everybody's doing it."
