Applebee's removes Oriental Chicken Salad after E. coli outbreak - KMSP-TV

Applebee's takes Oriental Chicken Salad off menu after E. coli cases in Minnesota

Posted: Updated:

The Minnesota Department of Health is investigating 13 cases of foodborne illness associated with a type of E. coli O111.  7 of the 13 people sick with E. coli O111 reported eating at Applebee's restaurants in Minnesota between June 24 and June 27, though other cases do not have any apparent connection to the restaurant.

As a precaution, Applebee's removed the Oriental Chicken Salad from menus at all Minnesota locations while the investigation is underway. As an extra precaution, Applebee's is also removing from the menu specific ingredients of its Oriental Chicken Salad.

Health officials are still working with Applebee’s, the Minnesota Department of Agriculture and other regulatory partners to determine the cause of the outbreak.

Symptoms of E. coli O111 illness typically include stomach cramps and diarrhea. People usually become ill 2 to 5 days after exposure, and most people recover in 5 to 10 days. Anyone who ate at a Minnesota Applebee’s since June 20 and has symptoms of E. coli O111 infection -- particularly bloody diarrhea -- should contact their doctor immediately and inform them of their possible involvement in this outbreak. They should also call the MDH foodborne illness hotline at 1-877-FOOD-ILL (1-877-366-3455) to report the potential connection.
