(FOX 11) Police say the 15 year old victim, holding on to her skateboard, was crossing the street at Baker and Fairview in Costa Mesa when the SUV hit her at 1:30 this morning.
According to witnesses, the impact was so great, the poor girl was thrown 50 feet in the air.
While the SUV's driver, well he just kept on driving, even though it was obvious, said witnesses, he knew he had hit someone.
"Witnesses told us that he blacked out his headlights right after he hit her" Lieutenant Gary Scott with the Costa Mesa Police Department told me. "It appeared he was trying to go undetected".
But as they say "you can run but you can't hide".
A person who saw what had happened, followed the hit and run driver all the way to his apartment, calling police along the way.
And just moments after the hit-and-run, police arrested 22 year old Ryota Takamatsu of Costa Mesa, booking him for both felony hit and run and driving under the influence.
Takamatsu's bail will be set at $100,000, say police.
Meanwhile, the teenage victim remains hospitalized in serious but stable condition.
