Posted: Updated:

Heavy downpours totaling 2 to 3 inches could occur through midday Wednesday. Lightning struck several homes in New York CIty. The storm caused power outages to thousands of customers in New Jersey. Streets and highways in several communities flooded. The flooding on the Cross Bronx Expressway caused severe traffic backups on the George Washington Bridge.

Winds gusts could reach 20 mph and possibly higher during severe storms.

The New York City Buildings Department says property owners and contractors must secure their construction sites and buildings.

It asks customers to report all downed wires to Con Edison and local police department immediately. The utility reminds people that if a power line falls on their car while, stay inside the vehicle and wait for emergency personnel.

If your power goes out in your home, disconnect or turn off appliances that would otherwise turn on automatically when service is restored. If several appliances start up at once, the electric circuits may overload.

Also, it recommends that you check to make sure your flashlights and any battery-operated radios are in working order. Make sure you have a supply of extra batteries.
