DETROIT LAKES, Minn. (KMSP) -

A Frazee, Minn. family finally has some closure now that they've learned Mary Lynn Andersen is dead after she had been missing for three decades.

Andersen and her husband left Minnesota in 1981 at age 23 and had been living in Gillette, Wyo., where police found her dead in a gravel pit in 1983, her skull and teeth missing. They took tissue samples and created a file for her, but she was buried unidentified, the Pioneer Press reported.

Andersen was registered as missing through the Becker County sheriff’s office, but her family realized her case hadn’t been entered into the system and submitted DNA to ensure her file was active. On July 2, 2014, the family learned Andersen had indeed been found. Her death has been ruled a homicide, but police in Wyoming are still investigating the case and hoping they’ll someday find who did it.

Crystal Andersen was 2 years old when her mother left, and the two last had contact over the phone on her third birthday. About two weeks ago, Crystal Andersen’s sister called her and told her she needed to get to her house right away -- the BCA and investigators who had been helping the family with the case had arrived at her doorstep.

“It was a big mix of emotions,” Andersen said. “I didn’t know what to feel, I just started shaking. It was shocking that they found her, it was under circumstances that we didn’t want to hear, but we knew that something had to have happened because she would have called us or let us know where she was. We’re just happy to finally be bringing her home and lay her to rest where she belongs,” Andersen told Fox 9 News.

Andersen said she doesn’t remember much of her mother, but one of her favorite pictures of the two together has been used in many newspaper articles chronicling her disappearance.

“I have so many things I want to tell her. She has two grandbabies that I wish she could have met, I have a 15-year-old and a 13-year-old daughter, and I wish that she would have been able to meet them,” Andersen said. “My hope is someday that they catch who did this to her and can bring justice.”
