Concert goers turn out for free Minneapolis show

MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) -

A few raindrops couldn’t keep hundreds of fans away from a big music event in Minneapolis. No, it wasn’t the Basilica Block Party, it was a piano concert put on by 8-year old Dylan Spoering. If the name doesn’t seem familiar to those outside of his neighborhood you aren’t alone. Young Dylan put a sign in his front yard promoting the event that caught the eye of local musician Thomas Rehbein.

Rehbein created a Facebook page to help further the event and Dylan hosted an amazing party featuring music and cookies.

“How long do you think I’ve been practicing?” Dylan asked the umbrella carrying crowd during the intermission.

Someone in the audience answered 15 years.

“I’m only eight,” the coy Dylan responded.

Despite some raindrops, fans sported “Dylan Rocks” and “Sign my poster Dylan!” and they all cheered wildly as he magically tickled the ivory as he made his way through well-known songs as well as the more obscure. It didn’t matter to the rain soaked crowd as they hung on every note.

The event was streamed live on Ustream in which nearly 10,000 people watched. Not bad for a neighborhood concert. As he finished his last song and stopped to invite the crowd to the park for an ice cream social, his fans screamed for an encore. Dylan obliged with “I’ve got music”.

Not a bad way to spend a Saturday in the rain in Minneapolis.

When it comes to drag racing, rocket-type speed is the name of the game -- but that also means things can go wrong very quickly, and a double crash at a Brainerd, Minn., track is another grim reminder.
