Tank Auction Helping To Preserve War History

Posted: Updated:

PORTOLA VALLEY, CA- Rare and expensive military vehicles are set to go up for sale in California this weekend.

The collection includes various gun parts and other military equipment and has been collected over the course of the last 30 years by an engineer and philanthropist.

Interested in getting your hands on a piece of this military history?

It's part auction, part history lesson.

With tanks dating from World War I to the Persian Gulf War each has a story to tell ...

Some of these armored vehicles were captured by the enemy and used against the country that built it.

One Panzer-4 in stock was at various times used by Germany, France, Syria and Israel in the past 60 years.

Now the Panzer-4 tank and hundreds of others are on the move again.

Housed on a private ranch about an hour south of San Francisco, these wartime relics have rarely been seen by the general public ... And might have been lost forever were it not for engineer and philanthropist, Jacques Littlefield.

"He observed that at the end of the cold war, there was a unique time in history to be able to preserve some of these, because typically they are destroyed, melted down and turned into other armaments." said Bill Boller, CEO of Military Vehicle Technology Foundation.

Now, 80 of the most historically significant vehicles are moving to a new home at the Collings Foundation Aviation Museum outside Boston.

And they won't just be on display.

They'll re-enact battles, and engage a new generation of Americans.

"Because it's so much more impressive to see, as we've been doing today, the vehicle in motion, to feel the earth actually shake underneath your feet, than to just see it sitting in a museum," said Rob Collings, of the Collings Foundation.

The rest of this rolling armor, about 114 vehicles , will be auctioned off this week at prices ranging from $10,000 to well over a million dollars.

In fact, they're hoping to get two-and-half million dollars for a German panzer-4, one of just a handful left in the world.
