LAKEVILLE, Minn. (KMSP) -

A Friday morning fire destroyed 5 units of a Lakeville, Minn. townhome complex. Neighbors initially thought the fire could have been caused by a lightning strike, because the fire started as morning thunderstorms moved through the Twin Cities. But the fire chief is convinced the fire started somewhere in a garage.

Darla Emanuelson was the first to escape before the fire started spreading. She started knocking on doors to get her neighbors outside.

“All of a sudden it seemed like it was really foggy out,” she said. “ I opened the door and there was this wall of flames.”

Doug Yost owns the garage where the fire started. While there's some welding equipment and possible accelerants in his garage, along with a garage door opener that has been acting up, investigators say it's not clear what caused the fire.

Roughly 10 people are displaced from the 5 unties affected by the fire. The Red Cross is helping them find temporary shelter.
