3-Year-Old Struck By Alleged Drunk Driver In North Philadelphia

Posted: Updated:

NORTH PHILADELPHIA-One man is under arrest and a small child was rushed to the hospital after police say a drunk driver ran over a boy playing outside in North Philadelphia.

Witnesses said they saw the 3-year-old gasp for air and turn purple after he was hit.

The boy’s family couldn't wait for an ambulance, so they drove him to the hospital themselves.

The driver actually followed the family there, before getting arrested for DUI.

“I was just completely in shock, I was shaking, my heart was racing, tears came to my eyes you don’t ever want to see something like that happen," witness Jessica Weiner said.

Witnesses described chaos after police say a drunk driver ran over a 3-year-old boy just before 4 p.m. this afternoon on 2800 block of North 4th street.

Investigators said the boy, identified by family as Jimmy Rodriguez, darted into the street.

“He was balled up in a ball and when I grabbed him he was bleeding out his mouth, his nose and his head," the boy's aunt Elizabeth Perez said.

Perez said he also fractured two ribs.

She watched the horrifying scene unfold in front of her.

“It hurt, it hurt. It broke my heart. I couldn’t breathe or nothing. I was crying. I didn’t know what to do," she said.

Another of Rodriguez’s aunts rushed home from work after hearing what happened.

The incident has her shaken.

“I don’t know what to do because I have three of my own and I can’t imagine what my sister’s going through at all," Suheidy Perez said.

Those who live around the block say now they're worried about the safety of the rest of the children in the neighborhood.

“You have to be cautious when you drive down the street, especially in the summer time when all the little kids are playing. You have to expect to be cautious where you’re driving and pay more attention to where the little kids are playing," Weiner said.

Rodriguez is listed in stable condition at St. Christopher's Hospital for Children.

He is being held for observation overnight.

The name of the driver was not released.
