Police: Pharmaceutical Delivery Man Shot In North Philadelphia

NORTH PHILADELPHIA-Police say gunfire broke out near a daycare in North Philadelphia and ended with a pharmaceutical delivery man shot.

Fox 29’s Dave Schratwieser reports.

The incident happened outside a pharmacy and was all caught on tape. The tape shows one of the suspects, police say, was involved in Thursday morning's daring robbery and shooting of a pharmaceutical delivery driver at 24th and Ridge.

“One or two people approached him, and they robbed, they shot him with a gun,” said Wellness Pharmacy Pharmacist Dr. Negash Selassie.

The video shows the alleged suspect pull up in a Ford Taurus and get out of the car. He then walks to the corner and quickly retreats to the car and drives away, according to the video.

It was just after 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, when the deliveryman pulled up to the Wellness Pharmacy to drop off drugs supplies when two robbers appeared and one opened fire.

The pharmacist inside the drug store says the delivery driver came running in bleeding from a hand wound.

“I saw the delivery person rushing in. And I called the ambulance and the police for him,” said Dr. Selassie.

The driver was rushed to a hospital, as two daycare centers just a few feet away on the same side of the street, immediately went into lockdown.

“There's a man outside with a gun, we shut down like we're closed. We shut all the gates down, children in the middle and the center and make sure they're safe,” said daycare operator Ginelle Scott.

The driver's Ford van was loaded with drug supplies. Police are still trying to determine if any drugs were actually stolen.

“He does deliver to our pharmacy every day, so he should have security with him as well,” said pharmacy employee Tanysha Handy Harrell.

Central Detectives arrived to process the crime scene and investigate. They pulled surveillance video from the daycare and other businesses to help in the case.

90 children were at the Stepping Stones learning academy, another 40 or so were at the Victory Christian Preschool next to the pharmacy at the time of the shooting.  All of the children were safe.

The delivery driver is expected to make a full recovery.
