Former GA Tech standout, wife denied bond

Posted: Updated:

A former Georgia Tech football player and his wife, accused of child cruelty, appeared in a Gwinnett County courtroom Thursday and were denied bond.

The court appearance comes after their arrest for allegedly holding their son captive in “deplorable” conditions for more than a year.

Police alleged Recardo Wimbush and his wife Therian treated their oldest son like a prisoner in the bottom of their home. The 13-year-old was reportedly locked inside a room in the couple’s basement, at the time of the arrest.

The couple is being held without bond on charges of Cruelty to Children and False Imprisonment.

Investigators uncovered the alleged abuse after someone called in an anonymous tip to DFACS.

Police say the only furniture inside the child’s room was a box spring and a mattress. They also the teenager was forced to use a jug as a toilet.

According to the child, he was not allowed to interact with his nine younger siblings.

Arrest warrants stated he only left the basement a few times per day to eat, use the restroom and brush his teeth.

The couple told investigators they banished the child to the basement because he had molested his siblings. However, the child believed he was punished for stealing a DVD player.

Investigators have stated they found no evidence of any molestation.

All ten children are now in the custody of DFACS.

The couple has been married since their Georgia Tech days where Recardo was a football star and team captain in 2002.

Wimbush signed with the Atlanta Falcons in April 2003 as an undrafted free agent but was released after training camp.
