ALL-STAR WEEKEND: Traffic outlook, what to expect

Posted: Updated:
MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) - About 160,000 people are expected to be in Minneapolis for MLB All-Star events according to Melvin Tennant with Meet Minneapolis Convention and Visitors Association, and the city is prepping for a big weekend downtown.

Twins president Dave St. Peter suggested visitors arrive 1 to 2 hours prior to any All-Star event all weekend and up until Tuesday's game. It's going to be a busy weekend, he says, but there's plenty of attractions and places to visit while visitors are in the area. Minneapolis City Council president Barb Johnson said that as far as visitors go, this will be the busiest summer Minneapolis has ever seen. Expect a majority of road closures to be in place by Friday.

ROAD CLOSURES

Several streets downtown will be closed to traffic July 11-15 for All-Star Game events and the Basilica Block Party.

Longest-lasting closures:

-6th Street North, from 1st Avenue North to Hennepin Avenue – Closed 9 a.m. Friday through Tuesday.

-South and east side of Grant Street E and 2nd Avenue South, from Marquette Avenue to 12th Street South – Closed 12:01 a.m. Friday through Tuesday.

-4th Avenue South, between 4th Street South and 5th Street South – Closed 8 a.m. Sunday through Tuesday.

-Twins Way, from Royalston Avenue to 7th Street North – Closed from noon Sunday through Tuesday. The section from Royalston Avenue to 10th Street North will briefly open to traffic Sunday morning until 10 a.m.

EXTRA LIGHT RAILS, BUS IMPACT

Metro Transit is also running extra light rail trains all weekend. Special Northstar trains will make trips to All-Star events July 12-15 and extra light-rail trains will be in service on the METRO Blue and METRO Green lines as needed throughout the festivities. All rail lines serve the recently-expanded Target Field Station next to Target Field.

Fans can also ride the Green Line to Stadium Village Station for the Target All-Star Concert featuring Imagine Dragons at TCF Bank Stadium on Saturday, July 12. Free rides on select Nicollet Mall buses can be taken to the T-Mobile All-Star FanFest at the Minneapolis Convention Center and several bus routes go to the Ramp B/5th Street Transit Center next to Target Field.

Bus service will be affected by road closures and will be detoured from Nicollet Mall to Hennepin Avenue from July 14 to July 15 for the Red Carpet Parade. The parade will also impact bus operations on 7th Street between Marquette Avenue and 10th Street North.

There's a big misconception about food vendors at the Minnesota State Fair. Many people think you can set up a booth, work 12 days and make a pile of cash. But it's not that easy. Aside from a lot of hard work, it also takes some luck.
