CAPE MAY COUNTY, N.J. - The U.S. Coast Guard awarded the Sliver Lifesaving Medal to Jonathan Alexander on Saturday.

Alexander is credited with saving the life of a fellow mariner on the Delaware Bay in April 2013.

According to the Coast Guard, Alexander was aboard the Sandra Lee fishing boat when he heard a distress call, which reported a man in the water around the area he was fishing.

When Alexander reached the scene, he saw Christopher Serra in the water after the Linda Claire fishing boat capsized. Alexander made attempts to throw a life ring to Serra; however, those attempts were unsuccessful due to Serra being physically unable to grab it because he was mildly hypothermic.

That’s when Alexander jumped into the water and placed Serra into a rescue hold and brought him to the surface.

The crew aboard Alexander’s boat  provided Serra first aid and transferred him to the Coast Guard Station Cape May boat for further medical attention.

The Silver Lifesaving Medal is given to people who endanger their own lives while saving or attempting to save another.
